This unique and beautiful hand-embroidered designer cushion in black felt wool portrays the head and shoulders of the celebrated 20th century artist, Frida Kahlo. True to her inimitable style, this design is appliquéd as a variation of the iconic portrait which graced the front cover of Vogue magazine in 1939, at the height of Frida’s fame. It is stitched in the traditional way, using blanket stitch, chain and straight stitch and depicts Frida in her beloved Mexican dress, with her braided black hair and distinctive floral headdress, against a backdrop of vibrant green palm leaves. This cushion has the official approval of the Frida Kahlo Corporation and is available in two colour ways, black or cream. It is fastened on the back with two mother of pearl buttons. By Jan Constantine.

With a design background in fashion, interiors and styling, Jan has gathered together her experience, her love of decoration and her Constantine drive to fulfil a lifetime’s ambition and produce her own Collection.
While growing up in a family of five children in Lancashire, Jan was greatly influenced by her mother who was a tailoress and her grandmother who was a dressmaker and milliner. From a young age she loved sewing and knew exactly what she wanted to be and do in the future. During her earlier career in fashion Jan lived in London. She now lives in rural Cheshire with her husband David. They have two daughters, Camille and Mary Flora.
The Constantine Collection includes original, hand-embroidered designs that feature on exquisite textiles and home accessories that stand alone as unique speciality products in the interiors market. The Constantine Collection is designed for today, and reflects the great attention to style and good taste that is lavished upon it. Each speciality item is destined to be an “heirloom of the future”.
Inspiration for individual designs in the Constantine Collection comes from favourite things and traditional hand-embroidery. Jan’s exquisite designs are hand worked on quality natural cottons, linens and wools. The word ‘Love’ and the heart motif are intrinsic to Jan’s collections and have been since the beginning of her business in 2002.
“I want to create something that will bring joy to people and be handed down, just as the embroidery skills of my artisans have been handed down through many generations.”
Jan’s goals for the future include wanting to keep alive the ancient, hands-on skills demonstrated by her very talented workforce. Her plan is to continue finding ways of introducing her exquisite products into homes worldwide and she hopes that, with the passage of time, her speciality range will become a favourite household name everywhere.
In 2012 Jan Constantine was the holder of an official licence for home textiles for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This great experience lead to many other opportunities as Jan’s designs gained a global audience.
Jan has written two books about her craft, ‘Heirloom Embroidery’ and ‘Love Stching’. Over the past few years Jan and her team have worked in collaboration with many other great brands to produce exciting collections bearing her distinctive designs.
